I want to grow my own plants in late winter for our Vegetable/herb garden next year. I know I need lights but my mom seems to think that it might be expensive to run three or four standard 4ft. fixtures 12-16 hours a day for 8-10 weeks.
We live in New York, West of the capital (in that area though). I’m not sure what the price is per kilowatt of electricity, but I would like to find out how much it will cost to grow our own plants vs. buying them.
How Can I Figure Out How Much Electricity For Three Or Four Fluorescent Light Fixtures Is Going To Cost?

Check the wattage on the bulbs, multiply that by the hours, then divide by 1000 to get the kWH, or kilowatt-hours. This is the unit of measure that the power company uses. Check your latest electric bill to find out the cost per kWH, then multiply that by the total kWH to find the cost. Good luck.

each light will have the wattage printed on them, possibly around 18 watts for a fluro.
add up all the lights and there wattage, 4 18 watt lights = 72 watts or .072 kilowatts.
look at you power bill and it will probably tell you how much per hour you power costs per kilowatt hours. e.g. 59 cents (just a figure)
59 cents * .072 = 4.2 cents/hour

a phone call to CON-EDISON customer services or engineering dept can help you and is the easiest path or you can go to ask.com and ask for the formula and do it your self as long as you know the coefficients and surrounding factors including ambient

Just use an old plastic food container (with a clear top) to build a mini greenhouse(easily do 20 plants)(put it in a window). To see what I am talking about visit the gardening dept of a hardware center).

All things considered, it’s hard to compete with the farmers. Your time might be better spent (more profitable) doing something else. Then there is the enjoyment of gardening too.
