I have purchased a filter for my aquarium which is rated for 220-240v @ 60hz - is it possible to use this product when i return to the US? I know you can buy a converter/transformer, but some people are telling me that it is quite dangerous due to the grounding/etc…involved and quite risky to do for a product that will be in continual use and very seldom turned off? I don’t know too much about voltage and electricity, so a basic answer would be appreciated - i don’t wanna burn my house down, which is what some people are making me feel like i am gonna do! please help…..

There shouldn’t be a problem for you to run this one in the US. Just get the right converter - i.e. it should fit the Watt level (not to confuse with the Voltage you just mentioned). I recommend you run it by your local radio-shack guys to get the right spec for your converter. They should be able to tell you if grounding is a problem here. If grounding is connected to the converter as well - you’re off and running with no problem at all!

Don’t fear…… You can not use that 220V filter on 120 V. You can damage it in some way if the if the pump stalls and is under half power. They are quite safe by themselves.
What I suggest is you get yourself a small step-up / step down transformer which you can use either way. That is one which has only one winding which is split in the middle. 0 - 117 - 230Volts. Your 117 Volt goes in to ) and 117 and the filter goes to 0 and 230V tap.
The only problem I can see is that you need to change the AC plug or you need an adapter AC receptable/adapter for the European pump/filter that fits the N.American connector. There is NO fire hazard to your house if you are careful and follow the established rules. Consult a friend or electrician who knows about this stuff.
I wish you success!
